Meganymoo
We are getting our cocker spaniel puppy in september and he will be eight weeks then! But what age can they start to go for walks and for how long?
Chucky Mama
Oo, Cocker spaniel puppies are so sweet, I hope that you are planning to post photos You need to wait until your pup is fully vaccinated before taking him out for a walk. When you start it should really be more of a 'trundle' to get him socialised with other dogs, traffic noises and day to day noises and things rather than a walk. When they are young you will see that they are quite floppy and clumsy. Too much exercise is not a good idea but socialisation is vital. Definitely no ball/stick chasing and nothing high impact or strenuous. I can only describe it as a trundle
Meganymoo
Thank You! We live in the Cotswolds where there are lots of hills and the are steep so should we maybe do a bit less than that?
Lavenders_Blue
I think there is a loose rule of thumb that suggests 5 mins walking for every month of the puppy's age. So a 3-month puppy could go for a 15 minute walk. This is, of course, in addition to playing in the garden etc. I'm sure it's not a hard and fast rule, but would give you a starting point for how much exercise your puppy could cope with. The Dogmother
Ooo, lovely *forms an orderly queue behind Chucky Mama* As the others have said, minimal exercise at first while their growth plates harden. Saw a lovely cocker puppy at the CLA Game Fair last week - scooped it up to have its ears snuggled.
