Confused...broody but still laid an egg?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone clear up my confusion? I put Mrs Moss into the broody cage on Friday night because she was showing all the classic signs of broodiness - and this is her 3rd or 4th time this year so I do recognise it easily now...

This morning - so she has been in the cage 36 hours - there is an egg that has dropped through the bottom of the cage.

I let her out, but she she was still all puffed up and after joining the others for a quick bite of breakfast she headed straight off for a nestbox and started nestling down, muttering to herself..so I lifted her back into the broody cage.

It is the egg that is confusing me.....I thought that broodiness meant no eggs. Am I doing the right thing by putting her back in the cage? Can someone help? :anxious:

Just to guess at the answer to my own question - (since "Ooops, word censored!"ody offered any other explanation) the egg found on Saturday morning was probably the last in the 'clutch' that she was hoping to incubate..... there have been no eggs since and she is still in the broody cage - acting very broody.

I am only posting this in case it helps anyone else out there who has experienced this ....
