I'm looking to buy a book to take on walks that will help me identify trees, birds, insects, plants etc.

So covering 'everything' one might see on an average walk in the English countryside rather than an encycloppedia of all known species.

(I thought the John Craven one was it - until I saw it!)

Any suggestions ??

I was thrilled to see in a bookshop recently that they still make the 'I-Spy' books for kids. That's about my level (& pocket sized!)

I don't know if the Observer Books series is still available? If not you can find them in second hand book shops, they are pocket sized and very good
