sjp
5/7 hatched yesturday/today 1 egg eaten first night 1 died early on thats the good bit checked Rebecca the broody this morning to find that 3 chicks had hatched (at least 2 hatched yesturday) but she'd abandend 3 eggs fair enough I thourght one was a dud anyway removed the 3 cold eggs then noticed that 2 had pipped expecting that they had died I set up to open them which I tend to do with DIS's anyway this is the lucky did instead of cracking them open like I usally do I started to pick at the most pipped egg with the point of a wood screw took quite a bit of shell away which exposed a little black beak which promptly opened both eggs got put in the incubator both have hatched by the look of them a little over an hour ago now for the question I want to put them back with mom which I know is best done at night but is it wise to do this tonight if they only hatched this afternoon? was thinking about 9pm as it will be darkish by then
Kirstie
Hi, I have not hatched with a broody before and have only hatched once so really have no idea what you should do, but felt no one had answered you so I would! My first reaction was to say no I'd keep them in the incubator(?) for 24 hrs to dry off before putting them in with mum. But that's only because I've not had a broody. In reality Its probably best to stick them in with mum tonight as mum will do the same job as an incy but better and I guess doing it tonight rather then tomorrow will make the introduction easier. I'm sorry about the rubbish post - let me know what happens x Kirstie
sjp
well I took the plunge and popped them under Rebecca just before 10pm an hour before I emptied the water out of the 'bator and dried it and they perked up by 10pm they were churping away and it's a warm night. Rebecca's now gone in mommy mode so that made life a bit easier as she's no longer defenceive and she started purring just after they went under her but it's still going to be a long night. I think I know why she rejected the 3 eggs through her first go at being a mom at Easter she only hatched 3 chicks and because it was a bit hot at the time I removed the duds at bit to soon so she could get on and take the 'kids ' outside Kirstie thanks for the thourght this is hatch 6 this year 7th in total 4th time with a broody much prefer using a broody but I do like having chicks in the house best part is at about 3-4 weeks when they find out how high they can jump/fly
