Induction Hobs

Recommended Posts

Having had gas for a long time now I haven't had either. I am having induction in my new kitchen though. My primary reasons for going induction are the ease of cleaning and the fact that it heats faster than gas. I have had a ceramic hob (about 12 years ago) and I remember it was still possible to burn milk on the hob, which the OH is good at doing.

I am moving on Wednesday and we do not have gas at our new home. In fact there isn't even an oven there at the moment. I will need a new kitchen and will get induction hob although I have no experience of them. None of my saucepans are suitable for induction and Tesco are giving vouchers for 70 percent off saucepans. I have been collecting these and have given my daughter my old ones.

HI

If the choice is between halogen and induction, I would definitely go for induction. When i was looking recently., it seemed that halogen are the worst of all worlds. Slow to heat up, not very fuel efficient. I very nearly bought an induction hob, despite the fact that we have a gas supply. in the end I went for a range thing instead of separates, and I chose gas.

EDITED TO ADD:

If youa re going for induction, make sure you see some of them in the flesh first. Two of my friends have them, and the one thing I didn't like about the particular models they chose is that it is a bit of a nuisance turning the hob up/down. They had to press press press press to go up, then press press press to go down. I don't think that is necessarily an induction hob feature, just a (poor imho) design of the models they chose.

I don't know anything about induction or halogen hobs but having lived in villages with no mains gas for the last 15+ years I've used either bottled gas (the tall bottles last for over a year for just the hob) or bulk LPG which we're on now (large gas tank) I just had to find a model which had electric oven with a gas hob which could be adapted to LPG - the gas convertor pieces come with it on delivery.

I had ceramic before but have had an induction hob for a couple of years and love it, easy to use, super easy to clean as nothing can burn on but the saucepans were expensive at the time. Mine is a Bosch and although the touch buttons can be a bit slow it has a double press option to heat to number 4 which is about half way and then on the plus button a double touch takes it to maximum power which is quite handy. Hope that makes sense!

If you're willing to get a new saucepan set then Induction is definitely the way to go, as with any hob, brand is definitely important but the difference in heating up time and efficiency is massive. Because the heat is created in the bottom of the pan there is no conduction through the glass so you can experience the same responsiveness and fierceness as a gas hob.

What sort of brands have you been looking at?
