My hen has the Runs! 2-3 weeks now! HELP

Recommended Posts

Can anybody offer any advice or solution?

Pumpkin my lovely 1 year old Buff Sussex hen has had a bad couple of months recently. First she was broody for 3 weeks, she is now moulting and has had diarrhea for at least 2/3 weeks now! Sometimes its green and now and again its white but mostly its waterey. She seems absolutley fine in herself- drinking/eating etc. All the hens were wormed about 4 weeks ago with Flubenvet and i've been putting some poultry tonic in the water.

I'm really not sure what causing her problem- all the other hens seem to be ok.

My normal vet was pretty clueless last time i took a poorly hen but charged me £30 so i want to avoid a trip to the vets if possible.

Any help or suggestions would really be appreciated as i'm very worried about her! :(

Many thanks

You could try Herban or Oregostim which have a reputation for clearing up digestive problems. Has she lost much weight or is she dehydrated? When it is warm they drink a lot more which makes them splatty but that would only be occasionally not for so long.

Another alternative is to send a sample to Retfords then go to vet armed with result and suggested treatment.

And guess what I am going to suggest? :D

You could send a sample off for testing, will cost about the same as you paid for no diagnosis and you will get a diagnosis and a treatment . Retford Poulrty Ltd do it also(I think it is) Crowthorne.

Copied from Littlehen website. I have used Retfords and you can send a sample in any small clean vessel. :)

Retford Poultry Partnership

(They send a sample kit and you send it back)

Again a very good service, easy to talk too and closer to us. They do not usually allow you to bring hens on site, unless its a post mortem.

thanks so much for your advise- i've put some cider vinegar in the water today. I think i might order some bokashi bran too. Hopefully she'll be better soon. I'd like to enter her into a chicken show in October once she has all her new feathers! (i've new showed a hen before) :D

I'll let you know how she feeling in a couple of days!
