Medical Work Experience in Wiltshire Help Please

Recommended Posts

Just posting on the off chance that someone has any connections in the Wiltshire area. ES wants to do medicine and wants to do get some work experience over the holidays and/or some ongoing volunteering. It is so blooming difficult to pin people down, they say they will phone back or write back but don't  Please pm any contacts so as not to have their details on the forum. Any tips other that the obvious of emailing, phoning etc would be most welcome :D

A GP friend of mine interviews for medical places so I asked him how they select. When all students have A grades it comes down to experience. He told me they do well if they have caring experience alongside their grades. He suggests working in a hospice to develop caring skills, experience death, grieving families and developing empathy.

I used to work in a Medical School - they all have their prefered selction criteria. Experience is often one. They want well rounded individuals who will make good caring doctors (as above, good A levels is a given). Getting an interview is obviously the first step (as all medical schools are greatly over subscribed and most applicants don't even get that far). At Leicester, applicants are interviewed by a Medic and a senior Medical Student (at the same time). I would suggest going on some open days (if possible)and talking to the current students BEFORE making the applications, as these students have been through the process and been successful.

Good Luck, H
