Green Tea
My two cockerels are 13 weeks now... how long do they stay on growers? At the moment mine are mostly still having growers although I'm sure in the afternoons when they are free-ranging with the hens they dip into the layers pellets too Ta, Sarah
miller30
Hi i feed my cockerals the same way i do my hens they go on to layers at about 14 weeks saying this when everyones running around together they go from the growers bowl to the layers and eat what they want i have had 8 week olds before eating layers and they are all fine i know there are rules and ages for chickcrumb, growers and layers but we sometimes we dont stick to them in my garden leanne
Redwing
I feed cockerels growers pellets for as long as I can, sometimes they never come off them For practicality I'd say you could move them on to layers at about 20 weeks, remember they really need to fill out so to move them on to layers too early would be a mistake though not life threatening
WitchHazel
If you're keeping them separate from the Hens, then I'd leave them on Growers indefinitely. If they are being kept with hens, then they could switch to Layers at the same time as you switch the hens on to Layers, but I would leave this as late as possible. Layers contain more calcium than is good for growing chooks, it can affect their development. Because we hatch chicks, our breeding cickerel and harem go onto breeders pellets about a month before we want to start collecting the eggs for hatching. They stay on breeders until we are sure we don't want any more hatching eggs from them, then switch back to layers. Hope that helps
Green Tea
Thanks I do keep them seperate for a while in the morning and they only get growers pellets then so will continue to do that for as long as I can (I do put the growers pellets out in the garden when they're free-ranging but obviously it's up to them which pot they eat from )..... I will try and work out if there's somewhere they can have some food that the hens can't get to as easily so that they continue on the growers for longer.
