peachachecha Posted August 24, 2011 Share Posted August 24, 2011 I have only been keeping chickens since 9 August and have been very stressed ever since. I have two Copper Marans, born sometime in March and I am letting my neighbor's grandchildren, an Isa Brown, born in April, keep their chicken with my two girls. Well, I purchased the Eglu Go with run and have found it is much too small (the run) for them. I live in the city and I cannot let them run about my yard. Wish I could 'cause it would be so fun to watch them. Ever since, I have been looking at ways to expand their run and found the run extension which we were able to order in the states just last week. I did and it came today and I shut the girls up and put it together as fast as I could. It is 84 F here and not a cloud in the sky. When I let the girls out they seemed happier, at any rate I am. Are you allowed a Walk in run .Mine is 12 ft x 6 ft and although they do roam in our small garden when I am in they could cope quite well with the WIR. peachachecha Posted August 24, 2011 Author Share Posted August 24, 2011 Since I am alone, except for my chickens and my 13 year old dog, Rosie, it would be difficult for me to build a run - in fact, near impossible. I am pleased with myself for putting the eglu and run together by myself. I spent any extra money I had on the eglu due to its ease in upkeep. I plan on saving until next spring and get the omlet netting. Then I will be able to sit inside the netting instead of sitting outside the run. jennym Posted August 24, 2011 Share Posted August 24, 2011 When you think of the source of standard supermarket eggs, 3 chickens in an eglu + run + extension makes for 3 lucky girls. If my calculations are correct I think even the new 'enhanced' cages would be stocked at a density which would put 5 chickens in a cage the size of the inside of an eglu (classic), without the run, for their entire lives. By the old cage standards it would be about 7 in that space. Now of course if you can get the netting I'm sure they'll love to roam around a bit, but far better you should be keeping your hens as you do than buying eggs from caged hens, as many people do without a thought.
