AndreaT
Hi All, Nearly there now with my WIR, just the roof to go on, so am starting to organise getting some girls I have found a supplier who has all the breeds I would like inc. buff orpingtons, but they are delivering so I won't get to see the set up or pick the chickens. They are AK Poultry in Aberdeen, has anyone used them, know of them? Any feed back would be great. My other option is Doune Poultry. They don't have orpingtons but do have australorps which I like the look of and I would be able to collect from them as they are not as far away. Choices, choices! Any and all thoughts welcome! Thanks, Andrea
squiffs
I would definitely go for the nearer supplier if you won't be able to choose or see the setup otherwise.
fluffy chick
I agree. Unless you can get a good recommendation from someone you trust I would rather see the place in the flesh before making a commitment. Plus I like being able to stand and erm and say 'er THAT one please' I have also been known to change my mind once I see whats on offer! How exciting
AndreaT
Thanks, you've both confirmed what I was thinking. My heart was saying Orpington, my head was saying get ones you can go see and pick! The countdown begins, 3 days to go!
fluffy chick
Could you take a day to drive out to get some orps? Or have you considered cochins or austalorps? Either way will be looking out for photos! I love big fluffy girls.
abieska
hi, never posted before! Yes we have used AK poultry as we live just outside westhill in aberdeen and I THINK its the closest supplier to us they are great - look on their website to see what they have or send them an email alex and kylie are always quick to reply we just bought 2 wellsummers and a wyandotte from them along with 2 khaki campbells they also had a lot of hybrids when we went in an outdoor run- all looked healthy and happy. ducks where freeranging in a field along with geese and turkeys and again all looked healthy with plenty of grass! not an easy thing to do! the silkies and our 3 chickens were in a shed which was a lot cleaner than other places weve been too our girls have been with us for 2 weeks now and have settled in fine with no problems. Although no eggs from the 5 newbies as they are still quite young- they are very tame and happy little things! would definately recommend ak poultry!!! AndreaT
Hi Abieska, welcome to the forum! I went with Doune in the end and got an Australorp and a huge Wyandotte X plus some others. The wyandotte has been laying since day two which is great, (had 4 so far in a week ) It's good to know that you recommend AK, I shall def keep them in mind for an orpington when I want to increase my flock. I'm loving chicken keeping one week in, although I did end up with 5 girls and a boy instead of 6 girls but that's a whole other story!! abieska
Glad i could help we love keeping chickens (and in the last 2 weeks ducks) Its v addictive! Ive been lurking on this forum since Feb last year when we finally convinced parents to let us build a run in our garden. its a great source of information and whilst i haven't posted it has been great to search through old posts especially recently when we lost two of our original 5. I just saw this topic and thought "yay i can actually answer this!" its great when you can find a nice breeder as well because we only want happy hens! especially in aberdeen because as far as im aware theres not many that supply from their own farm and i don't like buying at the marts.
