pinksponk
Help, I am new to chickens and have 2 lovely girls. How will I know when they are ready to lay. Does their behaviour change, or do they make a funny noise. One of my girls sat in a large dirt filled flower pot today and dug herself a hole in the dirt and just laid down in the dirt. I nervously thought she was going to produce her first egg but she didn't. So what was she doing ?
Egluntyne
She was dustbathing which is instinctive behaviour designed to rid them of external parasites. When they are ready to lay, their comb and wattles will redden noticeably, their appetites will increase, and they will 'crouch' ie bob down when you approach.
