So, after having the bantam girlies for 2 weeks, I now have "more-eglus" disease. Not sure about getting any more hens just at the moment but I'm hankering after a cube now I love the classic as it's so easy but...I am considering spacial issues. At the moment it just has the standard run and an 8ftx6ftx4ft extra caged area that I let them into when I'm around as its not fox proof. I am leaving them for the first time tonight just for the weekend and they are not happy they are in their normal run. I would consider an extension to the run but I have a feeling that would be to fiddly to clean etc. Walk in run not an option as plan to move some point soon. Cube is very pricey but is it easier to manage run wise? I feel a trade-up coming on.

Oh dear it didnt take long did it! In regards to your question i did the same as you in that i got a classic for 3 pekins. They were happy enough and i got 2 run extensions for it making it 4 meters which was too much and a right pain to keep clean. In the end as i already had a cube for my big girls and loved it i upgraded them and now they have one with a three meter run. Its so much easier to clean the run and the cube itself as it is waist height. The space inside is slightly more than the eglu run i would say. My girls do free range all day in a netted off area of my garden but i got the extension for the cube for if/ when we go away and for when the weather is bad and they are confined to the run. Hope this helps you make up your mind, also wanted to add i was worried the banties would struggle with the run ladder but they get up it easier than the big girls do! P.s, what colour do you have in mind!

I have my eglu on a permanent site with wood chip. Every so often I lift the whole lot off (with one extension) and change the wood chip. As long as I have some one to help lift it off and back on again it's not a hard job.

 

I only had the standard run on my cube but found cleaning the run area hard work. But then I only had the old small door on the run I added a wir which is obviously loads easier.

If the issue is just that you don't want anything permanent because you may move have you considered an Omlet WIR? They are a bit pricely but are also easily(well, fairly easily) put up and therefore similarly easily dismantled. So your chooks could enjoy the extra fox-proof space whilst you're in your present home and then you'd still have it if you do move. You can also easily insert extra panels to make it bigger if/when you might ever want to and it attaches securely to your Omlet run. And it is quite discreet looking in an urban garden and can cope with undulations for things like a slight slope or tree roots. Just a thought!

LunaKiw1 that's a very good idea! Didn't really consider it before but looking at the price of the nice wooden ones its about the same.

This is what ours looks like and someone posted a thread about theirs with photos only recently and if you do a search for 'Omlet WIR' you'll find other threads too. They do equate well on cost to wooden ones when you think about their versatility re moving and fact that you can extend etc and don't need a proper base etc - and aren't too intrusive.
