Pro - Does anyone else's nest boxes get soaked in rain?

Having successfully hatched & reared all 10 eggs bought back in May I thought that would keep me going for a while... Not so it appears

After re-homing 2 of the 4 boys and having the other 2 despatched (due to lack of homes & iffy temperaments). Then giving a promised one Barnvelder girl to my neighbour/chicken pal I'm left with 5 POL 20 week olds and my 4 older girls.

9 Girls - yep that sounds enough....

Now I have used the slightly feeble but true excuse of wanting something else smallish to go with my Lemon Pyle Brahma, so she has 'little friends' and not just the stonking great Speckled Sussex and reasonably large Barnvelders. So when visiting my local breeder & friend for some feed I casually asked what might be good company for my Lemon Pyle should I decide to get something....

She immediately said Wyandottes - and has some Silver laced & gold laced Bantams available. I had a look at the Silver Laced and fell in love with them! Of course you can't introduce just one so I put a deposit down on 2 and collect them next sunday morning

They are only 13 weeks so I have borrowed my neighbours spare house and made up a run within my WIR until they are old enough to mix with my POL babies first then the big girls.

I have not kept Wyandottes before - so if there is any specific info anyone has regarding their needs/temperament please post me some advice.

I just got some silver laced wyandottes a couple of months back, having lusted after them for over a year since reading about them in a chicken book.

 

They are the friendliest chooks you ever saw. Easy to handle and so beautiful. My son says they look like fish-net stockings, so they will forever be my fish-net chooks

You know that makes only 11 girls. You should really get 3 more to make a nice round number! Doesn't 12 have a nice ring to it?

She did have a gold laced there too..... 12 IS a nice round number!!

Here in the states we have what is called a "Baker's Dozen" which is 13 instead of 12. I have always considered 13 a very Lucky number, so maybe you should go for a Baker's Dozen just to be safe.

We have a Bakers Dozen here too!.... But I could go on forever choosing chooks! I'm like a kid in a sweetshop at Sues - I'm walking round saying "oh I like that one, oohh I'd love that one"! They are totally addictive!

I started with 2 four years ago, now up to 9. Foolishly promised hubby I would never go into double figures. Then I met my next door neighours new sebright bantams....... I do believe I said to hubby that I would never BUY any more, but as she has a cockerel and two hens and might need a home for babies in the future........I could never see a chook homeless

Well yes it is VERY much different to buying them!

My 2 have settled in to the temporary house & run very well. They look TINY against the others though

It will be some time before they are big & strong enough to go in with the Teenagers......

Here they are!!! My new babies! Still a little shy, but getting there. They are already running to the edge of the run when they see me coming

They were going to be called Shelly & Lacey, but my chicken mad neighbour asked me last night how Cagney & Lacey were and it has stuck!! Suits them better.

Bless them they are sooo small compared to my teenagers in the background - let alone my grown up girls!

But they are only 13 weeks old.

They are so cute and such lovley colours ,look very happy .Your pale coloured chicken in the background(sorry dont know the name) is beautiful is that a bantam as well,have just developed a soft spot for bantams since getting one a few weeks ago such funny little characters.

Yes she is a Lemon Pyle Brahma Bantam and really cute!! She is the reason I got 2 more diddies - to keep her company. (any excuse really!! )...
