chookingham
I got home from work early enough to let the new and old girls range together last night. The newbies have really got the hang of walking from the eglu, through the hatch into the main run and out the door so they can have a good roam. Going to bed however is a different matter. The first night of free ranging they managed to get onto the veg patch (which is netted but we leave open now all the veg is out so they can have a good rummage) but then couldn't find their way out and went to sleep in the corner under the remains of a tomato plant. Good excuse for a cuddle as we popped them back into the eglu. The next time we free ranged them we blocked off the veg patch, but I had forgotten to put the egg port door back on the eglu after a clean out, so they put themselves to bed through there. Last night, the speckledy (bert) managed to find the entrance to the run but the other pair couldn't and I found them roosting 5 feet up in the apple tree that shades the run. Boy were they unhappy when I lifted them down - woke up top chook Elsie who had to come out and have a look and then I had the problem of convincing two new girls that yes, they did need to go past the bouncer at the door to get to bed! Chortle Chook
I know what you mean about the 'bouncer on the door'. One of my chickens regularly blocks the whole entrance with her big fluffy knickers. If she had hands they'd be on her hips
