Mrs Potts
Hi everyone. I've always grown salad stuff outside, but saw an article recently recommending growing salads in the greenhouse over winter. Has anyone ever tried this and if so, do you have any tips? Thanks. HappyhenSG
Hi I've only ever done mine in the greenhouse and only during the summer. I'm planning to sow some mixed salad leaves this week having spent the weekend cleaning and tidying my greenhouse, so will see how it goes. I don't imagine they will require quite as much watering as it won't be as hot in there.
Chickpea
You need to grow winter varieties of lettuce that will withstand the cold temperatures, 'Erika' 'Winter Density' & 'Mohican' are all good ones that will survive being frozen! Also chinese leaf such as tatsoi pak choi etc. However they need to have been sown by now to be strong plants for overwintering, you can probably still find some at the garden centre. You will not need to water too often, and if you do always in the mornings so the plant has a chance to dry out a bit before the evening. You main enemy will be mildews and rotting off, so be vigilant with ventilation, opening up everyday & shutting down every night, also covering with fleece at night should help. Just finished planting 100s in our polytunnels so fingers crossed! Hope this helps.
Mrs Potts
Sarah/Lucy - many thanks for the posts and the advice. I have cleared one half of the greenhouse for the greens, but am still cropping tomatoes from the other half, which I had not expected. I will let you know how it goes but it sounds as if the plants might survive which is better than I had thought. Really liked your blog pages too, Lucy.
