new hen stressed by long journey or mareks?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, i collected 4 beautiful pekins yesterday that had had a long journey to get to me(too complicated to explain!). One of them, a pretty porceline girl isobel was quite lethargic when i collected her and is still the same today. I have given her some nutri drops and weetabix with some bokashi this morning and she has eaten this and had a drink. The salmon girls are right as rain but i am very worried about isobel. She just seems exhausted, could it be the stress of the travel that has upset her? I feel so guilty as if i hadnt have brought them they may not have had to travel so far. Is there anything more i can give her to help? The new girls are in part of the wir seperate to my others for now.

I think your friend is right. If the other 3 are ok after their journey, it sounds as if something else is going on. You have done the best thing by separating her from the others, and I would keep her somewhere warm and keep an eye on her. If she doesn't improve within the next 24 hours, I would take her to the vet.

Did you get them from a breeder? If so, I would give them a call too.

Good luck with her.

Hi again. I have spent the whole evening worrying about isobel and am now terrified she may have mareks. I read that stress can bring on the symptoms of the disease and she would have undergone a certain amount. I am hoping to god it isnt as she may have infected the other 3, let alone the rest of my flock. Thet are all seperated but only by wire. Having said all this she doesnt seem paralyised just worn out. I dont know, just working myself up into a frenzy of worry. :?:(

There isnt anything to indicate mareks as it stands so dont panic

Chickens should tolerate long journeys ok if not well, a good tonic in their water may perk her up but if she is really lethargic and the others arent it could indicate something underlying, the pics that the breeder posted on the other forum show her to be a bit smaller than the others, could they be giving her hassle?

Hi redwing, i contacted the breeder and i 100 percent believe she was healthy when she left her. She did say she was bottom of the food chain and yes i agree the pics did show her to be healthy and i totally trust the breeder, she went out of her way for me to have the hens and seems a genuine and good person.. I will give her some more nutri drops and keep her warm. Maybee she just needs building up a bit? Just want her to be well, the other hens look a picture and am so thrilled with them.
