Omega 3 Question for Veggies

Recommended Posts

I don't do anything special for my diet. You can take flaxseed oil which is available in health food shops which is the cod liver oil equivalent. Omega 3 can come from fish, nuts and seeds. I've never liked fish so veggie or no veggie I woudn't ever get Omega 3 from fish anyway.

People often ask me 'what do you eat?' Food! It's surprising how many foods are out there that don't contain meat. Nor do I sit at home munching on a carrot.

Hi, thanks for the responses and the link :D They look better than the supplements I'm taking so will be heading off to boots.

My little one currently has milk with added omega 3 I'm just thinking ahead for when he is off the milk as the supplements all seem to only be suitable for over 12 year olds :(

I am convinced you can have a very healthy diet and not eat meat or fish and am pretty happy that we get everything we need from our diet my only concern is the omega 3...

Though I have read if you feed your chickens flaxseed they produce omega rich eggs, though I am not sure how true that is...?

I just found this when doing a quick search. Obviously, I don't know how correct it is:-

"If you're looking to economize without sacrificing nutrition then add the flax seed to your own diet rather than the chickens'. It's a much more efficient and cost effective way of getting more omega-3 fatty acids in your diet."

My OH has a bottle of flaxseed oil also :)

Hi does he use it in cooking or take it like a supplement by the spoonful?

Yes it is amazing how many people automatically assume you must be lacking in something if you don't eat meat. Some people act like I must be a bad mum if I don't feed my son meat. I have to say I am very fussy about his diet and making sure he gets fed fresh healthy home cooked meals and that he is getting all the nutrition he needs but the comments still worry me. :(

Here's one of the bits I read about eggs I guess the problem about the internet is anyone can write anything so it is difficult to know what to believe...

Omega-3 Eggs

In traditional human diets eggs were a rich source of Omega-3 fatty acids. Traditionally, hens were allowed to range free and peck on grasses, plants, and bugs in the soil. When hens had an adequate level of bugs and Omega-3 rich forage in their diets, they produced eggs with Omega-3 fatty acids as well.

Most hens today live in hen houses to protect them from predators or in cages of commercial egg producers. Hens with these industrial lifestyles will not produce eggs with notable levels of Omega-3 fatty acids. An egg industry flier shows us that a commercial egg will have only about 40 milligrams of Omega-3 fatty acids per egg.

But the eggs you find in the supermarket labeled “Omega-3 enriched” (or something along those lines) is a new type of egg. Hens producing these eggs live in the commercial operation but they receive flaxseed (or occasionally a fish-based supplement) as part of their daily ration. Hens typically receive a diet of about 10% flaxseed.

An egg from a hen on such a diet will typically contain over 200 milligrams of Omega-3 fatty acids, including about 75 milligrams of DHA. The ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acids will be about 2 to 1 – approaching the dietary ideal of 1 to 1. Commercial eggs have a ratio of about 20 to 1.

I have also read that these omega ratios are wrong

Flaxseed oil should not be heated as it destroys the fatty acids that the body converts to Omega 3. I used to buy my flaxseed oil in a bottle rather than capsules but it tastes sooo revolting that it has to be disguised in something tasty like a smoothie. Also it needs to be kept in the fridge as even at room temperature it goes rancid very, very quickly. I find the capsules easier for those reasons (they don't need to be kept in the fridge as the capsules are airtight).
