vickichicky
Hello All, Bit of a shock this morning to find my two 25 week old Barnvelders looking sorry for themselves. Didn't come out into the WIR for their breakfast, Stayed in their run - pluffed up and swallowing a bit. I put Citricidel in their water as I always do at the first sign of any illness. At lunchtime when I went home to check on them they were still in their run sitting together. Didn't want any of the rice I offered them I've now crushed Garlic and put it in their water in case it is a cold. No Rattling on breathing, though their throats are going in and out a bit. At lunch I thought their faces looked a little swollen below their eyes - as their eyes looked almost a little 'piggyish'. I put some fresh shavings down for them to sit on to keep warm and a little corn in front of them - which they did have one or two pecks at but that was it. They are very quiet. Anyone have any advice or anything to look out for please? Thanks, Vicki x Ps All my others are totally fine - have observed them very closely. Tweety
Are they separated from your other hens? If not, I would do so in case they are infectious. The worrying thing is that 2 of them are under the weather, and showing the same symptoms. It sounds as if you know what to look out for - rattly breathing, nasal discharge and bubbling eyes would indicate myco - so keep a careful eye on them for any of these. If they don't improve within the next 24 hours, I would get them to the vet.
vickichicky
Thanks for your response Tweety! When I checked them last night I did find Bubbles in their eyes So was straight on the phone to my chicken Breeder/seller pal who came round this morning and gave them both antibiotic injections for me. They are both going to have a course of 3 injections. She said they'll have picked it up from wild birds. I have got LOADS of Seagulls & Rooks around here at present as the field behind me had sweetcorn in it and since they have cut it down there is a glut of squashed cobs. Florence is looking brighter today after the Citricidel & garlic in their water (no eye Bubbles this morning) and actually came out of the run for some food. But Gertrude is still very quiet. I am keeping them warm and on clean dry shavings - but my friend said not to worry about isolating them in this case as the stress of that can make it worse. Fingers crossed I see an improvemnt in them soon
