No shell???

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have had 4 hens now for a month (purchased from a repurable farm and with all injections done) and from day 1 each hen has produced 1 healthy egg each day, however ALBIE the number 1 chicken in the pen picking order of food has for the last 2 days produced an egg without a shell?

I have recently been digging in their area to erect fence posts and they went beserk when I got the metal tape measure out, Other than that there daily routine has been the same.

Their food menu during the day consists of :

Layers mash

Layers pelletts

Layers corn

meal worms

Veg (sprouts, cellery, cauliflower florets, cabbage etc)

Water all day

Grit

Treats: porridge, bread dipped in milk, noodles

All the birds look healthy and go about their business during the day as normal but ALBIE is concerning me now that her 6 weeks of healthy egg has turned to soft shells for the past 2 days. Any ideas what I should do to get her laying hard shell eggs again?

Sometimes they seem to lay soft or no shell eggs for no apparent reason. It usually sorts itself out eventually. One of mine laid such soft shells that broke if you touched them for WEEKS! She is fine now.

As your Albie was laying healthy before, I am sure she will be back to normal in no time.

Hi all and thanks to everyone for replying. After 2 days of soft shell-less eggs my chook is back on form laying hard shell eggs. I put her on a strict diet and laid off the treats, concentrating on vitamin D and calcium products. Maybe the diet that cured the problem or the building work ceasing her stress levels?? The main thing is she is fine now. :D:clap:
