Can dogs suffer from Alzheimers ?

Recommended Posts

Our cocker spaniel will be 15 years old very soon, but she is already deaf, has bad cataracts and just lately she has decided to just park her bum and do a wee. Today hubby was really cross with her because she parked her bum and just pooped on the carpet. Ususally she asks to go out but just lately she sometimes seems to foget and just does it.

She doesn't dribble from her botty except sometimes when she is in a really deep sleep.

Any ideas why she is doing this ?

She could be going a bit senile but equally she may have something going on that is causing these individual issues. For instance joint pain could be making it uncomfortable for her to get herself in a position to go to the loo resulting in overflow (often when asleep) or accidents. Or, as mags says there could something going on with her bladder. It is probably a good idea to return to some housetraining style rules in terms of letting her out at intervals even if she hasn't asked to go out to avoid accidents. A trip to the vet is worth it to rule out anything obvious. There are also a couple of medications that can help support brain function in an older dog.

Thank you both.

She has only wee'd a couple of times and only pooped the once admittedly - but it is a worry when she really does seem to forget.

A trip to the vets would be a good idea. I didn't anything could be done, so maybe they can help.

Also sending her outside more often would remind her what she's meant to do.

Poor old thing

Thanks again xx
