Gertie
Hi there All of your crochet creations are stunningly good, so I'm hoping someone might know a good pattern for a simple wooly hat. I have not made a hat before or followed a crochet pattern. I can follow an instructional YouTube movie. I can make squares & flowers so far! I'm hoping to make christmas presents for next year so am starting early!! This is the hat I'd like to make http://www.google.co.uk/m/search?tbm=isch&client=safari&hl=en&source=univ&tbo=u&aq=&oq=&aqi=&fkt=&fsdt=&cqt=&rst=&htf=&his=&maction=&q=crochet+hat+patterns#i=3 (just realised the pattern for the hat is with the picture!!) any tips still gratefully received! Thank you
Snowy
I couldn't see the instructions for some reason But I'd say go for it. Hats are really very simple to crochet and once you've done one you will find them addicitve! It's just a case of crocheting in the round, increasing each time until the crown is the right size, then continue to crochet without increasing which gives the body of the hat. You then just stop at the required length to give a simple beanie, or make it longer to get a fold up brim. Different yarns and different sized hooks give different finishes. Using a smaller hook gives a more rigid fabric whereas using a larger hook gives a more floppy, elastic fabric. A basic pattern I used involved making your initial starting chain ring, 6 single crochet into that for round 1, round 2 - crochet 2 single crochet into each stitch, round 3 - 2 single crochet into 1 stitch, then 1 SC into 1 stitch, repeat to end; round 3: 2 SC into 1 stitch, 1 SC into next 2 stitches. Try looking on Ravelry, there are loads of free patterns on there

Snowy
Yes I'd be up for that - they are so easy to do once you get the hang of the basics!
Gertie
Thank you Snowy. I'm going to try tonight as an experiment with my 5.00mm hook and double knit wool. I'm delighted with the flowers I made. Hopefully I'll have made enough gifts by next Christmas!!
