3.6m Omlet Chicken Run for sale, Brand New in Boxes, Milton Keynes (MK19)

Hi,

 

I've had chickens for the past 2 and a half years.

I had two chickens brought with my eglu from Omlet

And my Lilly died last week of impacted egg.

I have tried to introduce a new friend to the remaining

Chicken but she's having none of it, she had badly

Pecked the new chickens neck causing a nasty wound

I was just wondering would it be ok if I kept the new

Chicken in a cardboard box overnight inside until the

Morning when I can get a separate house for her?

so sorry this has happened, it is very upsetting to deal with and someone who knows a lot more than me will be along in a minute to give you some good advice. As you say she has a nasty wound, I would do as you suggest and bring her in for the night in a box, clean her wound and spray some septi cleanse on it and let her recover overnight. I am sure they will settle down eventually and as I said someone will be along in a bit to give you some advice on introductions. Good luck

Thanks for the reply, I have cleaned the wound and sprayed gentian violet

on it. She seems perky still but don't want the older chicken to have another

go In the night.

She's in my spare room now in a cardboard box with hole in.

I did everything I have read about introducing them but does not of seem to

make any difference at all, I think the older one just misses her mate and won't

except anyone else! I've nick named her the devil chicken!

How about smothering the new chicken in vaseline so the attacker can't get a grip? Well, not totally but you know what I mean - like boxers do!

Il try that while there in the garden tomorrow together. I hope she's going to be ok in the cardboard box tonight, I feel really bad that I've had to put her in there but it's got loads of air holes in it and shes in the dark. It's got to be better than sleeping in the same coop with the chicken thats trying to eat her! I keep hearing her move around in the box every now and then, will she be ok in there?

as long as she's not too warm and there is lots of ventilation then she'll be fine. You will really need to take it very slow with the introductions and certainly don't let your other hen anywhere near the newbie while she's got an open wound.

Thanks for the reply it's put my mind at rest a little. Tomorrow she will have her own coop and run next to the eglu, not going to take any chances this time.

I want to get the new chicken ( blossom ) a nice friend, do you think it would be ok if I got another from the same group I got her from, the same age and size and introduced her at bedtime?

I think that's a good idea - to get Blossom a friend from the same batch. POL are like teenagers - the matriarch will see them off. When Blossom's wound has healed up, and after lots of seeing each other through the wires, and a bit of free ranging together (difficult this time of year), maybe the older established hen will tolerate the youngsters. Maybe put the older hen in the new coop and after a while introduce her back to the other residence, so it's not her stomping ground and she is the newcomer. Have you squirted some purple spray on the wound? Otherwise if you introduce a fresh hen, from the same batch, she might open up the damage! Life is never easy
