LolaLayla
My 2 new girls are settling in well however I often find broken eggs in the eglu At first they seemed to find it difficult to negotiate the bars inside and struggled to get into/out of the nest box. However they now seem more confident. Most eggs are laid on the bars and get trodden on. So I decided to take out the back bars and put in a rectangular cardboard box with aubiose. Today I found a broken egg on the front rail. I think I may take out that rail too and replace the box with an old roasting tin that got damaged at Christmas (just don't let them who the last resident was ). I will fill it with aubiose too. Any other ideas?
Ain't Nobody Here
What a shame . I bought a roll away nestbox when mine were eating their eggs. It was tricky to fit into the eglu (I had to rest it on a brick and secure it with garden twine) but it kind of worked. It's probably can't be soon enough to be of any use but you're welcome to borrow it. Are you going to the Peebles show?
LolaLayla
Not sure if they would use it as they seem reluctant to go in to the nest box, but thank you for the kind offer I will bear it in mind for the future. I could not get Aubiose today but bought Rapport instead. It was too wet to go out to put the tray in the eglu so I will try that tomorrow. When I went to check on them tonight they are both sitting in the cardboard box where the bars had been. I thought hens liked to be higher and not on the ground but they seem to prefer to sit down. Lola and Layla are both laying now after Layla's moult so we have a lot of eggs. Even if Estelle and Trixie don't lay any useable eggs it doesn't matter as they are so lovely to look at When is the Peebles show
Ain't Nobody Here
Hopefully they'll sort it out themselves . Peebles Show is on Sunday 26th February. Still to check that OH doesn't need the car but if not I'll probably go (as long as there are a few Omleteers there!)
