Broody wars

Recommended Posts

Well i put 3 fertile eggs from my bator under bean a few days ago , she is an amazing broody so should fnish the eggs off herself well .

Just gone to do the late check on everything and jelly ( beans sister ) has also gone brody and taken one of the eggs :( jelly is not so good at brooding and leaves the eggs for long breaks and finily gives up after a few days :( ,

I have a spare hutch for them to be on there own but she isnt to happy about being moved from the nest box ,Is there a good way to move her to a better place ?

Also molly my ex bat girl sleeps in the nest box as she has not had roosting bars where she last lived and wont use them  Bean lets her sleep at the other side of the nest box but with her nowty sister broody there is not much room

I need to move her but i also dont want to stress her out and with this weather as it is i also dont want to put the eggs back in the bator and try snapping her out of it , she is bald underneath shell freeze :!:

Here she is no to happy about the eggport opening

If you move her at night she should be fine

Some breeders use something that is removable when encouraging hens to be broody - a cat litter tray, a cardboard box etc.. this means they can move the broody with her nest very easily - something which may be useful to others reasing this

I would put unreliable Jelly back where she was and leave Bean on her own to hatch the eggs and to care for the chicks.

I've got 2 broodies sitting at the mo in their own hutches(one week to go) and they have been fine so far. As long as it is dry and draught free they seem to cope with the cold. One is in an eglu and it looked like an igloo at the weekend , I had to dig the snow away to find the eggport but the hen and eggs were fine.
