Unsecure chicken perches

Does anyone know if rock salt is harmful to chickens. My garden had become a bit treacherous so I have spread rock salt over all the pathways I use in the garden; one from the house to the run, one from the run to the food bin and one from the run to the grit and other chicken stuff bin.

 

I thought I had better not make another path through the chicken area to the run, as I wasn't sure if it would be bad from them. However, it does seem to stick to your feet and get trodden around the chicken area anyway and of course, the girls are eating it

 

I just wondered if too much salt was bad for them - I hope not

Too much salt will play havoc with their kidneys (as it does for us ) and chooks will eat anything and everything - even rock salt!

 

We haven't salted our areas, dh has raked/spade/kicked paths through (because I won't get salt for him to use )

 

I suggest you don't free range them for a little while

I don't use rock salt in the back garden for that reason - I would keep them off it until we've had some rain.

Don't beat yourself up over it, its all a learning curve
