craftyhunnypie
Hiya - sorry to hear about your chick. Mine is roughly the same. But its legs don't seem to be splayed. It's like it has one weak leg. I am doing all I can for 'Topple' who loves me to bits & thinks I am its mummy. It can stand & run for a little while, then topples & can't get back up. I always have to make sure it is under the heat at night before it falls over. I am putting it down on the piece of carpet about every hour or so in the day to have ' walking' lessons eat & drink away from the other chick. This way I can ensure it is getting food & water. I wondered if there was anything else we could both do for our chicks? Nutri drops? Or other type of leg splints etc? I don't want to have to cull the chick until I know how it is going to grow up. It may get better as it gets stronger. Well that is what I am hoping. It doesn't seem in any pain either. My chick is sort of lop sided rather than bum heavy. Such a worry aren't they! Egluntyne
That's a shame, but it was the only thing to be done under the circumstances.
craftyhunnypie
So sorry to hear about your chicks. It was for the best though - as they would not have got better. I'm having Trouble with little Topple. This morning I thought it had died in the night. It had got out from under the electric hen somehow. It was cold, limp & taking small shallow breaths. I breathed some warm breath onto it & rubbed it's little back then popped it under the electric hen. After a while it came round. I have been dipping it's beak & it has taken water. I'm not convinced it is now eating. It hasn't properly opened its eyes today & it is quite floppy. I do think it is going to die in the night. Have compared its growth next to its sibling. Even it's wing feathers haven't sprouted from their quills properly yet. Other one has. The other chick is noticeable growing quite quick. They are extremely close! I've asked hubby to get me a small teddy for its sibling - incase Topple dies. I can't source a silkie chick locally. I have tried this morning. craftyhunnypie
Topple is still with us. Not properly opened eyes today. The other chick is so much bigger & stronger. I had to clean out Topples beak earlier as it had become full of undigested crumb in the top of the beak. Not good. I noticed it, when I dipped its beak to drink. It's not doing anything for itself anymore. It can't possibly live without food. I am blaming a blip in incubator temperature. It dipped during the cold spell! The other egg pipped but didn't get out. I think the temperature & humidity blipped. Hubby opened the unhatched egg & it was a gold chick - the same as Scooter the Hooter. A damn shame! Clunie
Oh Emmastar , I'm so sorry to hear about your babies. I tried hatching in an incubator for the first time last year and unfortunately had to cull a newly hatched chick as thanks to the other jumping on the remaining eggs, this poor chick shot out with it's insides out and blood everywhere. It was very unpleasant and I must admit that it almost put me off incubating again. however I thought that as I'd bought the incubator I'd better use it and the next two hatchings went well.
