What on earth is wrong with their cube? odd chook behaviour

Recommended Posts

My girls have an eglu and cube attached to a wood framed wir. This afternoon I visited my girls to do an egg check and noticed they were all up one end of the wir, and someone was investigating the (generally unused) eglu. I thought this was a bit odd, rehung the feeder that had been knocked off and left them to it.

Just been out to check on them and got a fright - 3 'babies' al fresco on the branch: check, noises from the eglu... ok about 3 in there, check the cube: no-one. No-one at all, no-one in the nestbox and no-one on the bars. Oh hell where are they?? Can't see any signs of a break-in, go and re-check the eglu.

Thankfully, I eventually counted the remaining 7 in there

but

but

What's wrong with their cube all of a sudden? I cleaned it yesterday with the usual stuff, they laid eggs in it this morning. The only thing that is different is yesterday I lined the nestbox with a sheet of plastic cut from a bag instead of a sheet of paper bag (which gets all damp and claggy which is why I changed it.)

Anybody got any ideas?

i'm sure someone who knows much more will be along shortly with some suggestions but all i can think of is; does the bag make a rustling noise in the breeze perhaps? or does it smell different to the chooks? also maybe has the cleaning product used reacted somehow to the plastic of the bag and made some sort of smell?? grasping at straws perhaps?!? maybe they just saw you putting something new in there and are a bit suspicious? from what i have read in the last few years of checking out these forums, chickens can be a little bit cautious with any change to the norm.

hope you get it sorted out anyway! bet they are all snug in the eglu together :)
