2 chooks, 1 egg :-(

Recommended Posts

Is there any way I can tell when my hens are likely to start laying?

I bought 2 POL black star hybrids at the beginning of February (i know, i know, give them chance! ) 1 girl has laid an egg almost every day since day one bless  her however still no joy from the other one :(

I can't say that they're both definitely the same age although they're a very similar size so I don't think there's much in it, the only difference I can see is that one has a much larger comb than the other.

It's no major problem, 6 eggs a week is plenty for DH and I, it would just be nice to give some to the neighbours too!

I've checked and double checked for mites, they've been wormed, are free range for at least half of the day, eaet plenty of greens and are fed layers pellets so I'm happy that she's happy, if that makes sense?

Any ideas?!

POL is quite a big gap of time, for a hybrid it usually means 18-24 weeks but in reality gets streched as far as possible by suppliers often back to 14 weeks! a lot depends on the honesty of the seller

In saying that every chooks is different and just like people they mature at different rates

The move to a new home never helps things and nor do other causes of stress such as children/dogs etc.. some birds take it all in their stride and others dont

To tell whether a bird is in lay locate the 'pin bones' which stick out either side of the vent, if the chook is in lay then these will be wide apart - a few fingers width in some cases. if the bird isnt laying they will be close together, maybe just a fingers width apart or practically touching
