KimmyCustard Posted March 5, 2012 Share Posted March 5, 2012 Since the girls returned from their hen holiday about 2 weeks ago, they have been a little off colour, not laying and two have begun moulting. I have fed them up, gave them extra protein, Avipro in their food etc. 4 out of 5 have begun to lay again, although not every day. This morning I popped in the run and found a white egg laid on the floor of the run. Not only has this never happened but the eggshell was white! I've only ever had brown or dark creamy coloured eggs, never white. I've had the girls a year this month and they were all POL when I bought them. Has anyone any idea as to firstly why the girlie decided to lay in the WIR (and no nest built, just looked like it was dumped where she stood!) and why it's now white please?! Very confused..... Ain't Nobody Here Posted March 5, 2012 Share Posted March 5, 2012 Sounds like she knew there was something different about it so didn't want to lay in the nestbox . I wonder if the "colour spray" part of the laying process was missed out for some reason. It'll be interesting to see what colour her next egg is! auntielizzie Posted March 5, 2012 Share Posted March 5, 2012 My Rhode Sussex Bessie seems to be prone to laying these very white eggs. Her normal eggs are pale brown small to medium sized. The first time she laid an odd egg was just prior to her moult last Autumn. She laid a quite small thin shelled very bright white egg. I thought it was very odd at the time, but this was the last egg she laid until after her moult. She hasn't really got going again properly since the moult, what with winter weather and the short days. She was laying maybe one or two eggs a week for a little while, then she popped out another of these very bright white eggs, again smaller than usual and quite thin shelled (when I opened it the white was very thick and cloudy). This has been followed by another egg drought (although she did lay a nice normal egg on Saturday). This doesn't really answer your question, but at least you know that somebody else has experienced the white egg thing. She does however lay these eggs in the nest box. I just put it down to her being a little more highly strung or delicate than Betty, who lays practically every day without fail - she is a Columbian Blacktail. KimmyCustard Posted March 6, 2012 Author Share Posted March 6, 2012 Thank you ladies, I experienced a slightly creamier coloured egg this morning, but this one was in the nest box! I think it was Marge that laid it, she is a Colombian Blacktail and prone to ditziness, she is also the lowest on the pecking order so maybe she was growled at when she tried laying in the nest box yesterday and was sent packing! She has had a few feathers fall out so she may be on her way to her first moult as well.
