Broody Alert and Rain!

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I recently purchased some lovely pekin bantams - feather and duster (thanks Omlteers for naming them!) and one of them has gone broody.

I don't mind at all as long as she is happy which she seems to be - is it ok to just let her get on with it?

She lays one egg in the morning and then just sits on it! She isn't very old either I don't think - only started laying regularly over the last few weeks. I do remove the egg everyday.

Also what is with this rain?!

Although my girls are in their WIR the aubiose is still getting damp /wet from where the rain gets it. There ARE dry patches so will it be ok to leave the damp aubiose there until the weather dries up? There is plenty of ventilation so cant see a problem with it causing respiratory problems.

ALSO one last questions - Pekin feet - what so I need to be looking for? They are of course feathered and seem fine - just wondered if there are any particular problems that I need to keep an eye out for.

Many Thanks!

Jadine

Hi if you dont want her to raise chicks then you need to try and break her out of being broody otherwise she will loose condition try sin binning her not that this has ever worked for any of my pekins i had one rear 3 lots of chicks last year. Also pekins are prone to scaley leg mite so just keep an eye on them they dont like mud either otherwise they get great balls of mud hanging off the feet feathers i wouldnt worry too much about the damp auboise in their run my pekins have a big run with woodchip in but it is still a nightmare in this rain keeping them clean and out of damp conditions but their in the fresh are leanne :)
