mad.hen1
Would just like to ask how many of you go in for run extensions, and what is the longest run anyone has tried? How long are the extensions and are they worth the expense? I live in a fox infested area and wonder about extensions to increase the hens range without compromising their dafety. chelsea
We added the run converter which adds another metre - because we felt guilty I would love the extension to add on the converter which would give us another metre too ! Need to work on other half though as chooks seem to be taking over the garden. I think lots of people go for the extensions or you could go for is and assemble your own DIY run which you could make to a size to suit you
Egluntyne
I have a converter and extension on each of my Eglus. I think you are only constrained by the space available and your purse and could add extensions ad infinitum if you wanted to. I found them too heavy to move with the 2 extra pieces on. Cleaning might be a problem if the run was very long.
Hen Watch
I ordered 4 chickens in the standard eglu/run delivered by Omlet. They do free range an awful lot, but only a few weeks after they arrived, I ordered a converter (which is the bit you add before you get more extensions). It added an extra 1m and I am pleased I got it. I have toyed with the idea of another extension but as my girls free range a lot, I am not sure if it is needed, or indeed if my garden can take a really long run. Olly
I've got the converter and it makes a huge difference; I can't (dare not) let mine free-range, but it gives them a lot more space. It is difficult to clean, though - I wish there was an easy way to separate the sections, because to rake the litter out you really need to get inside (or have a small child handy!) I've got the extension as well, but I'm not adding that until the autumn when I'm planning to get two more hens - I'm hoping that the extra metre will help ease the friction between new and old! I'm lucky enough to have a big garden, but the converter and extension are going to make a very long run - not sure I'd want to add any more! chelsea
I agree about it being hard to clean....hubby crawls in there ...Im a bit claustraphobic so I definitely wouldnt go in. I wish the extension would go around in an L shape rather than one long run as I have a wide garden.
Gallina
I have the converter and one extension on my Eglu. It made a big difference to the lives of the hens, but was a nuisance for me: I couldn't move the Eglu any more, and hated crawling in. It also looks a bit like a polytunnel. I would say get a Cube with an extension if you possibly can and sell the Eglu. The Eglu converter and extension would cost £96 and Eglus fetch a good price, so the difference is not so very huge.... But maybe you haven't had your Eglu very long, in which case I would start with just the converter. The other advantage of the Cube if you have foxes is that the hens in the run can jump up the ladder and feel safer if a fox is prowling, and can get further out of the way generally. Olly
It also looks a bit like a polytunnel. That's my only complaint ... especially when I had an offcut of white shower curtain over it! I've replaced it with a clear one now - but the run with extension does look like something you might grow plants in!
mad.hen1
Re selling on the eglu.... you're right, not had it very long, but even so would love a cube.... where to sell? Ebay? Or do omlet do a part exchange scheme?!
Mrs Frugal
No I'm pretty sure Omlet don't do part exchange, I'm afraid.
