How many in standard run + extension?

Recommended Posts

Hi, my two chickens passed away a couple of months ago. I think I am getting some new ones from my children for my birthday. They want to give me one each (so 3) I have eglu and standard run and I know 3 standard hens is too many in that, so I have dropped the hint that bantums may be the way to go. But I still think I will need an extension on my standard run to fit 3 in. They will have some time free ranging but will be in the run for a lot of the timeS. What do you reckon?

The standard run on its own is too small for three hens, but with an extension it would be fine - I've certainly kept three hens in an extended run with no problems. I was not able to give mine much more than an hour a day free-ranging, obviously the more you can give them the better.

I over heard my husband discussing it with my 5 year old.

Once he had gone to work she was itching to let it slip, so it went like this..... What kind of animals do you think you'll be getting for your birthday mummy? I said an elephant, she said no 3 dogs, no 3 cows, no forget Ive said anything. Rub that thought out of your head mummy!

Bets on as to how long it will be until she lets it slip completely bless her!

I have cleaned out the old run but need to order some run clips etc so that its all ready to go if I get "3 dogs" to fit in it!

I have 3 Light Sussex bantams in my GO + 2M run.

They only free range for about 1 hour / day but get on fine together.

I've not had problems with feather pecking or bullying but that may be because they came from the same brood.

I feed them mash rather than pellets and they have about 100mm wood chippings to scratch about in.

I'm sure if you stick to bantams the standard run will be OK.
