Flubenvet - Gapeworm

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Yesterday we noticed our speckedly wasn't interested in her food. By the afternoon she was just standing around opening her beak repeatedly. From our research it seems she has Gapeworm.

I know that I can order it online but if I order it now it most likely won't arrive until Tuesday and as she doesn't seem to be eating this might be too late :-(

Does anyone know anywhere that stocks Flubenvet so I could pick some up today, Sunday? I live in Stevenage but am willing to travel. If not does anyone know where I could pick up some Nettex Nutridrops which will hopefully keep her going.

Many thanks,

John.

Welcome to the forum, John :) . Sometimes you notice a hen gaping but then they stop after a while. However, it's certainly a good idea to worm them all anyway and Flubenvet is the best wormer. (I think gapeworm requires a double dose?)

As it's a Prescription Only Medicine you'll have to get it from a vet if you're not buying it online. If that's not an easy option, I would search online and find the one that looks like delivery will be the quickest.

Good luck, keep us posted :) .

Thanks Melbourne12 very much appreciated.

Unfortunately we couldn't manage to get her to eat any food so we've had to resort to making up an equivalent dose in a small amount of water - it works out at less than half a gram a day. We fed her this as soon as we got back and also gave her a vitamin supplement to try and give her a boost. I'll try dosing her twice a day if she survives tonight.

I started the other two on the Flubenvet mixed in with 2Kg of mash. They've been eating it all afternoon so hopefully they'll both be OK.

I'll keep you posted - thanks again.

When I went out to the hens this morning I could only see two and feared the worst, but fortunately she was just hiding in the eglu. I had to lift the roof off to get to her but she seemed to have perked up a bit although she was still gaping.

I managed to give her a few ml of Flubenvet but when I tried to give her more than a ml of the vitamin booster she started to move her head away. I took this as a good sign, as yesterday she almost seemed to be in a trance like state and it was easy to syringe the medicine down her throat.

I've just come home from work and found her out with the others and not gaping as much as she was yesterday - she now doesn't want to have things syringed down her throat at all - which is encouraging :-)

I put some of the medicated food in front of her and she's started eating it so hopefully she is on the mend.

Thanks for all the help - I'll keep you posted.

Hi Jon

The regular dosage will not clear gapeworm if that is what she has; the vet would recommend a double-dosage (which has to be prescribed) or using Panacur (again has to be subscribed), they will also recommend egg withdrawal for the period of treatment with either of these.

Good luck.

Thanks for that - I was just going by what it said on the instruction leaflet.

She seemed a lot better this morning - only gaping slightly. However, she still doesn't seem to be eating much. I managed to get a full days dose into her tonight along with some vitamin booster.

She's improving dramatically each day but she needs to start eating soon. Hopefully tomorrow if she feels better she might start eating again.

Thanks,

John.

She's started preening herslef and eating again :) I give them a few treats every evening as I find it's a good general indicator of their health. By Wednesday/Thursday she'd started eating them again.

I haven't actually seen her eat the mash yet so I've started weighing the contents every day to see how much they are getting through. At the moment its around 400g of double medicated mash per day for 3 hens (the speckledy, a light sussex and a goldline) but it is creeping up. To me that seems about the right amount for the three of them.

She's still shaking her head every now and then and isn't quite right but I'm not sure how long it takes to kill off all of the gapeworms.

Anyone else know?

Cheers,

John.
