I've ordered a wormery!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I am pathetically excited having ordered a wormery yesterday!!!!!!! 8):D I've wanted one for AGES but didn't feel I could justify the cost. Have been keeping an eye on Ebay to see what I could find, but they seem to go for almost as much as new ones. Then yesterday, I noticed that "Wormcity" had listed six of their 100l wormeries as "seconds" so I took the plunge and ordered one and with delivery it's less than £30 :shock:8) . Decided not to order worms as I won't be in to take delivery, but can go to the fishing tackle shop at the weekend to rescue some worms from there. 8)

This is largely down to other posts on Omlet about wormeries etc which have spurred me on in my quest for a wormery and I'm just bursting with excitement (how said and pathetic is that??):roll:

Any tips for successful wormery management???

I've got 2 wormeries and 8 compost bins so as you can see I love composting.

Don't put alot of the same thing in at once, layering is the key and a balance of green stuff (veg waste etc) and brown stuff (paper/card/animal bedding etc). Don't forget to keep tapping off the liquid otherwise it builds up and the worms drown. I also crush egg shells and add them to it to keep it sweet. I also occasionally mix with a small fork to airate. Do not add meat or left over cooked food. Once it's full, add the next layer on. By the time you've put the top layer on, the bottom layer is normally ready to go. Move the bottom layer to the top and take the lid off - the worms do not like light and will make their way down to the other layer. Any that are left, just pick out and put in the lower layer.

You do not have to add any water in a wormery, like you do to a compost bin, you will get seepage through the lid and this tends to be enough. If you've got a compost bin, you do have to add water, mixed together with a 'little wee', which acts as an activator.

Hope this helps and happy composting.

Ooooow I'm looking for a cheap one. Wonder if they have any left?

They don't - they had 6, but I think they'd sold all of them by mid afternoon yesterday (good job I didn't "think about it over the weekend, as had been my original plan) I think I've seen them list seconds before though, so maybe it's worth checking regularly (and/or contacting them direct?)

Thanks Chooks Aloud for all the tips. I'm already a keen composter so I'm hoping I'll be able to get into wormery composting ok :anxious: I've seen people saying they add lime and/or "worm food" (you can buy this from various wormery places) do you do either of these? I wonder if you adding the crushed egg shell would take the place of the lime?

My current plan is to save "the best" stuff for my wormery - I mean veg peelings etc and put garden stuff in the compost bins. I guess it's a bit like composting in that I need to find a good "mix" that works for my worms?!

I can't wait, I've wanted to have a wormery for years and years so I'm hoping it might have arrived when I get home tonight :anxious:

 I'll have to keep an eye out. Really don't want to pay alot of money for one.

That's exactly how I felt, did um and ah whether to order one yesterday, but they seem very good and I suspect I would regret it if I hadn't. Keep an eye out - these were on ebay, but they might list them on their own site too?

If you're already into composting then you will not have to buy any worms, just take some out of your compost bin, add them into the wormery and let them do the rest. I don't put lime or anything else in mine, apart from egg shells. My way of thinking is that I'm getting something for nothing, buying something to put into it doesn't make sense to me. I've never had a problem with the wormery doing what I do - it makes fantastic compost.

My compost bins have the majority of the garden waste, but I do put some of the chicken bedding in (aubiose or whatever I'm using). My wormeries are nearer the house so household stuff goes into those mainly, but do remember to put in your brown material as well. All my cereal packets, boxes etc are composted.

Hooray! My wormery arrived on Friday (VERY speedy delivery 8) ) and I set it up yesterday, the worms have moved in and the temptation is now to start piling in all sorts of green waste for them to eat, though the instructions say not to give them anything to eat for two weeks

All very exciting!!!
