Is one enough?

Recommended Posts

I've got an Eglu Go in a fenced off area of the garden and 4 chucks. They have all started to lay now. I've noticed today that 2 want to lay at the same time. One is in the nest area and the other is going in and out in what looks like abit of a panic.

So the question I'm asking is ....is one nest area enough for 4 chickens?

Four two one nest is fine, I believe general recomendations is that you have at least one nest per five hens. If she get really desperate she will find a way to get into that nest, and normally you shouldn't have any problems. There are also some hens who march around for a while, dipping in and out of the nest box before they lay an egg, even if it's vacant, I like to call this "an active birth".

But my general point is, yes one is enough, if you want to provide them with alternatives you can, but there's probably no need.
