pixiewish
We are going to be getting our first chickens in a couple of weeks time now. We have decided on bantams and think we would like to get one pekin, one orpington and one wyandotte bantam for variety. I have found two suppliers locally. One who can do the pekin and gold laced orpington bantams...and the other can do all three breeds. The first supplier has been fab at responding to emails about stock etc, whereas the other hasn't responded at all. How do you decide where to go, and is it usual to go and have a look first and then reserve and pick up at a later date, or would they normally expect you to take them then and there? Also what would be standard prices for these chooks. The first supplier quotes £15 for POL pekin, and £30 for POL gold laced orpington?? Redwing
I think those are reasonable prices Is the orpington a large fowl? if so I would maybe expect the breeder to express concern at the size difference of those birds Some breeders will let you reserve for pick up later on but if the birds are ready to go now then the breeder may well want room for youngstock so would possibly not keep them for very long especially if they have had other enquiries for the same birds I'd go with whoever you feel comfortable dealing with, I would personally visit both and then make your decisions based on your dealings with them and what you see of their set up and stock
pixiewish
Thanks Redwing, the orpington is a bantam.
angeluk69
All I can advise is go with a supplier that you feel completely confident with, who answers your questions, offers you advice at every step, and and doesn't try to fob you off and is happy to spend time going through things with you...even after yuo have taken home your hens. I went to put my name down on 4 hens at my suppliers, as I knew I wasn't getting the house for a couple of days, and they offered to put them to one side for me so we chose them on the Saturday and picked them up the following Wednesday...I do feel that this helped with the introductions and has made things less stressful all round. Just ask, some places maybe dont have the provisions to be able to put them to one side, some are more than happy. Gut instinct really plays a big part.
