Incubator question - Day 20 and a chick aready!

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I am using an incubator for the first time (have hatched with a broody before). Today is Day 20 and we have one (Pekin) chick just out and 2 have pipped (13 eggs in there).

I know I can leave the chick in for 24hours, but after that time is it OK to open the incubator, fish out any chicks and put the lid back on if the rest havent hatched? Will that spoil the humidity? How does it work?

Many thanks,

We had ours hatch early too even though we'd had 3 powercuts of around 4 or 5 hours each. You can leave the chicks in there for upto 3 days. I wouldn't open the inc whilst there rea pipped eggs in there but if all the pipped eggs have hatched then I'd remove the chicks if they've dried. I've read that if the eggs are really fresh then they are likely to hatch slightly earlier and I know my first to hatch were the freshest eggs.

I would leave the chick in till the others have hatched (or at least the majority are dry)

Newly hatched chicks can live without food and water for a few days and I regularly leave mind in the incubator for 36/48 hours in fact I firmly believe it does them good! Chicks need stable temperatures more than they need food at the start
