jeshen
Golda's solitary chick (Nigel/Nigella) is 2 weeks old. If he/she turns out to be a girl I'd like to keep her. Reading this forum, Golda will get fed up and want to return to the flock when the chick is about 8 weeks old. I'm wondering whether it will be safe to introduce the chick to the flock at the same time as its mother? The others have all been watching Golda and the chick (who are in a run within the larger run). Today I've put Golda's run out on the grass so that the others even see her and the chick while they're free-ranging. So it's not as if they're unfamiliar with the chick. However, I'm wondering about the alternative, (if the chick is a girl and I can keep her) which is to buy another 8-week old chick at the point when Nigella is left on her own. She'd then have company for the next couple of months before they could both meet the flock together. It would mean, however, that I'd then have 6 bantams in my eglu classic, which is pushing it a bit. Sorry for all these questions! Am thinking ahead....! Redwing
I would get another chick, 8 weeks is very young to be introduced to a flock and chances are the mum will get fed up before the 8 week point too 6 in a classic isnt too terrible
jeshen
Oooh, thanks for that suggestion, Redwing! Can now tell my dear husband with authority that another chick is needed!
surfer_chicken
I have 5 large fowl in an eglu classic so I'm sure 6 bantams would fit fine
