newcountrygirl
I have bought three new chicks today. One is a Lavendar Pekin, one is a Barred Wyandotte bantam and on is a Polish Frizzle. I went hoping to get POL hens but fell in love with the three 10 week old chicks. Is there any advice you can give please. I have just moved my other girls into a new Doodlehouse and walk in run and so the newbies are in the eglu and run. I have made them a little ramp so they can get in and out and taking out the roosting floor part of the cube so that it is flat. I have put wood chips in but arent sure if this is ok for young girls. Also - should I close the eglu door at night. My other girls had it open as they were enclosed in the run - but if it will make the babies feel more secure then i will start doing it. Chortle Chook
I'm sure someone will be along very soon with excellent advice about 10 week olds. I just wanted to say what a lovely set you have. I have a Polish frizzle and she is as daft in character as she is crazy in looks but I'm really fond of her. She is always the first to be looking for worms if I'm gardening and yesterday actually fell head first into the hole I was digging She is also rather bright and quite adventurous. She is the only one who will come out of our garden into the area at the back where people have their cars if I leave the gate open. I spent a good hour chasing her around the overgrown plants out there the other morning. She knew not to come for meal worms and was brilliant at getting round the back of inaccessible bushes. I swear she was laughing at me Do please show us some pictures.
Plum
I've had them at that age and gave them growers pellets and had a pot of chick grit in the run. I would shut the eglu door at night to protect from preditors who could reach into the run or frighten them. Otherwise I don't know that I treated them much different. They were given a bowl to dustbath in and some logs to clamber over and make the run more interesting. My little house hasn't got perches so guess I did the same as you. Just love the cheeping they make, do enjoy them while they are small
newcountrygirl
Thanks Plum and Chubbychook. I have just been out and put them to bed. It took some doing to get them to go into the Eglu. I ended up kneeling in the run and flapping and clapping. Eventually they went in. They are so sweet. I closed the door of the Eglu then went back out just now and opened the back door. They were all three in one corner sat on top of each other. Hopefully they will soon get the hang of it.
