Gilbertson16
One of my chickens, we have 5 who are all point of lay, gave us our first egg today, but when I picked it up it was all jelly like and fell apart in my hand!is this normal? We have 2light Sussex, a new England red and two merrans . I suspect little red hen laid it.
shemybelle
Hi I've learned that a soft egg is completely normal when the hens are getting into the swing of laying. You might get more. It means that the hen is very close to laying normal eggs (as long as they are on layers food and grit). My two laying hens gave me a softie each before laying normally. WitchHazel
Hi Gmybelle says, it's perfectly normal for a hen to lay a few sodd eggs while their laying gear gets sorted out. Soft shelled eggs, or wind eggs (which are shells without any egg in) are common. Your pullet's comb and wattles should get much darker red when they are coming in to lay, so that may help you identify which girl it is. Won't be long now. craftyhunnypie
Perfectly normal! You'll get a number of these throughout your hens lives. Plus a whole host of mini eggs, extra huge eggs, ones that are lumpy bumpy, pointy ones like torpedos & even ones like scrumpled up paper. All normal! Well done that chook! IanT
Congratulations on your first egg!, our leghorn also laid a few soft ones before settling down to produce hard shelled eggs.
