Chucky Mama
A good rat in bait box should do the trick. A bait box will prevent any local dogs or cats getting in to it.
cheekymonkey68
Good Evening! I got a couple of rentokil bait boxes from homebase, left them down for about 3-4 weeks, job done! I do keep an eye out tho just in case they start to come back, as which point I'll get new bait for the boxes which I've stored in the garage and then pop them out again as needed. It is a bit of a fright when you see how cheeky the rats are, and I have to say I love all wildlife, but you have to do the responsible thing, as they could end up hurting your girls or spreading disease Marion
j00lz_12366
We had an issue with this quite recently and had the council 'rat man' round. He said it wasnt the chickens attracting them-I asked him to have a good look at the set up and tell me what was the attraction. His opinion was it was the compost bin that they liked, and indeed, they had nested there! He put some bait in the bin and that solved the problem! leedg
were having major issues with this at the minute aswell, the other night when I was locking up the chooks a rat jumped off something and landed on my leg And then tonight I've watched a family of 5 young rats running backwards and forwards to a poison station infront of my window in broad daylight Shortly after this there mum/dad came out and it was propbably the largest rat i've ever seen, it was huge! I've been relying on poison for the last 3weeks, but after what i've seen tonight im now going to use a combination of poison, cage traps, break back traps and shooting. Just have to be careful with poison, as rats have the habit of dragging it out and leaving it scattered across the garden..

sjp
I have just had the fright of my life I went out to lock the girls in and there it was outside the coop 1 bigish rat looked at me and just walked off behind the shed and disappeared I am in shock what is the best rat poison I can get tomorrow to get rid of the vermin baq, homebase are near by any good not to worried about price just want my girls to be safe any suggestions please I'd go to your local farm supply shop or feed merchant and get it from there with a bait box. for rats I ues a loose grain bait as the rats have to sit and eat it with the blocks they tend to take them back to the nest and store them for later I also keep the bait boxes topped up year round to avoid the problem of the rats building up ammunity to the posion and once you find the spot were they will take the bait from leave the bait box there full time rats like a safe food source plus it helps you to monitor the situation

sjp
I forgot to add it can take up to a month before rats start to take the bait if after about 6 weeks they have started to take it then move the bait box to another part of the garden but don't over do the bait stations I only use 6 for the whole of the allotment

PhilipCaldwell
the trick with rats is to keep putting poison down until the poison stops dissapearing, I use Neosorexia and its works great, hardly see any rats now and seems to work very quickly even in small amounts. Poisoning is the only way, I used to try trapping them and the like but its just a constant running battle doing it this way. Good luck and persevere
muzzboy
I have 5 trays around the garden with poison and every night so far they all have been emptied by the morning does this mean I have lots of rats to deal with and how long does the poison take to kick in
sjp
it depends on what you are useing blocks or grain if it's blocks then they could be taken and stored a reasonable sized rat can carry a bait block off if it's grain then you could have a largeish problem. it was about a month after they start to take the bait on the allotment before a saw a reduction in the ammount taken. I use grain and my boxes hold about 400 grams
