Gloss-Hen
Hello. Im debating whether to breed seramas or naked necks. i have already a silkie cockerel so i dont want a cockerel thats to loud. sjp
I'd like to say naked necks but I think you'll sell sermas easier. as for crowing I think that's going to be down to pot luck as it'll be differant for each bird
dance in the dark
Well, any topic with naked neck in the title will always get SJP's attention, so I am not surprised by their suggestion. I have naked necks and think they are great, most people who do keep them always says what lovely, hardy, easy to keep birds they are, and I agree. They are also pretty brilliant layers, when one of my NN's who is a 1/2 bantam or something, came into lay she laid for 8 days in a row straight out of the gate! As for Seramas I don't know much about them, with the crowing I think serema's are supposed to be quieter but I don't know what "quieter" really means, and they can be quite tricky to breed as they have a lethal gene and don't have any standardized colours. But they are meants to be friendly and great pets, but pretty useless as layers You might find it easier to sell Seramas but I think it will be more difficult, so that depends on your confidence as a breeder. Also, with decent quality naked necks you will find people willing to travel to buy them as there as so few breeders (especially with large fowl, though I assume you are after bantams?) Redwing
Seramas are smaller but my goodness those crows are shrill

dance in the dark
Well, when I got my NNs I got them from Shelly Rogerson who lives near York, although your probably live no where near. She breeds quite decent number and is very well respected judge at poultry shows and is farm manager for a stately home. She only breeds NNs (cuckoo and black) and white lagshans so she is pretty specialized. The birds I bought from her are lovely, completely clean necked lovely examples of the breed.
