Isobel
Hi - my bantam has taken to a clutch today but when I went to lock the girls up tonight I found two of the Big Girls sitting virtually on top of her in the nesting box and the sheer weight of warm hen had squashed one of the eggs. All of the others were then covered with yukky stuff. I know you shouldn't wash eggs that you are going to incubate but you also have to keep them clean! I have had to wipe off the sticky stuff with some clean water and I have put them back under her (and removed the rude hens to another coop!). Has this more or less ruined my chances of a good hatch do you think?? If so I could always pop some clean ones under her tomorrow and start again (but I bought some of these eggs, they are posh ones!). Any advice?? mimi5
Hi there, Well I think they might be ok. My experience with my broody pekin was she pooped on her eggs not once but twice!!! Yes I wiped them with damp paper towel (warm water only) Out of 6....5 hatched!!!! A bought egg chick died day 3 (other bought egg didn't hatch) but the other 4 (all my own eggs!) still going strong, now 7 weeks old!!! But they turned out to be 3 cockerels and a hen!! Best wishes for your hatch!!!
craftyhunnypie
I have wiped eggs before now, when I've used a broody that gave up & another one took over! What that 1st hen didn't do with those eggs - honestly.they looked like she'd been playing rugby with them & the broody coop was clean. They were really mucky! Naughty girl. They hatched no problem after a wipe. Emma.x
