The other birds

Recommended Posts

I have had a lovely close encounter with nature over the last few months and it's all down to having the chickens. This year we have a very friendly robin in the garden who cottoned onto the plentiful supply of tasty chicken feed during the winter. Then in spring he start to wait for me at the kitchen window and "escort" me to the chicken pen every morning and then flit about until I'd share some of the pellets with him :). A few weeks ago he introduced me to Mrs Robin and they would both join me every morning, sometimes even jumping into the feeder before I had even hung it up on the bars. They would take soem pellets, fly off and then be back a minute later for more.A few more weeks into spring and I could hear the little cheeps of a baby in the area and then one lovely sunny day Mr and Mrs Robin brought their two babies for me to see. So cute  .

I didn't think that experience could be topped really but then this weekend I was in the pen cleaning out the eglu's and chatting to my new bantams when one of the young robins (looking much less like a baby now but still without the red breast yet) came right down to my feet and stayed with me hopping about in and out of the cages for all the time I was cleaning out.

I also have a very handsome blackbird that visits everyday but he tends to keep his distance more.

It's the little things sometimes .... :D

I'm sure I'm not the only one - anyone else had similar encounters?

I've noticed a big rise in the number of garden birds since we got chickens. Part of it must be because they shout at any cats that come through. We used to have five regular cats in the garden, now only one is tolerated who happens to be the same colouring, but even so, if that cat doesn't keep it's distance and crouch down, it will get shouted at.

Little brown birds that I think are called Dunnocks have become very brave and will eat and do that ant-cleaning thing right next to us.

I was weeding the other day and there was a mouse darting in to grab insects just like robins do. I'm in the garden more since we got chickens too.

Yes, we have more birds too. I was totally delighted the other day to see a thrush and some baby thrushes  I haven't seen one of those in ages. We also have many more sparrows. I hadn't realised how much I missed their chattering till they started up the other day when the chickens were kicking out a lot of Nature's Grub bits that I'd stirred in with the pellets in their Grub.
