Harrietshens
Late this afternoon we suddenly heard a terrible noise coming from the run - sounded like a really loud sneeze/cough. We found a hen gasping for breath, and she was also coughing/sneezing out a horrible mucous kind of thing. She convulsed a few times and within minutes she had died. Other half saw a few slugs very near her and we think she may have choked on one. Has anyone else had this experience? With it being so wet, we are inundated with slugs in the garden, and I know this particular hen liked to eat them. We don't think it was gape worm, as the hen had been perfectly healthy an hour previously (plus, coincidently, a friend's son who's doing research on parasites had checked our hens' faeces only a couple of days ago and found tiny numbers of the eggs of three very common parasites - but not gapeworm). Now it may be that something else took our hen, but I would be interested to know if anyone else has heard of a hen choking on a slug. Luvachicken
Sorry to read about your poor hen. I'm sorry I have no idea if a hen could choke on a slug. One of my original omlet pepperpot did manage to get down a big frog though.
Mrs_B
Very sorry to hear about your poor chook. Must have been so terrible I thought chickens loved slugs and I haven't heard anything like one choking on one before but I have to admit some of the slugs which have been stalking my garden for weeks because of the rain and huge and have wondered if the chickens should be eating something so big. x
