Reference for a job?

Recommended Posts

Morning? I'm after a little bit of advice if I may?

I'm applying for another job (had a few interviews already for various things but I keep on being pipped at the 2nd interview (grrr)). Anyway the job I've applied for wants to check references before interviews. My first thought was my bosses boss at work, as she knows me quite well but is not my direct line manager. I'm not sure however if she is allowed to give me a reference or if I have to put HR? (who I guess would give the standard I confirm you have worked here for x years statement) anyone got any advice?

Many thanks!

References are pretty useless now as no one is allowed to write anything negative. Most employers take them with a pinch of salt. If an employee has been awful they are only allowed to write things along the lines of how long they were employed for and the role they had  I would put down your boss. Good luck :D

Hi, she sounds a good choice. Depending on your work policy she may have to write as a personal referee though (not on work headed paper) rather than a work reference. Our work references have to come from HR and are pretty useless, they confirm you are living and breathing and that's about it! She could still write that you work together though and how fab you are as an employee :D

Good luck!
