Chicken shack
I have 7 girls and 1 cockeral but I am only getting 1 or 2 eggs a day. 3 on a good day. I worm regulary, they do not have lice, mites etc. They have a huge WIR and free range when I am there to supervise. I can only think it is due to their age. 3 are ex batts I got last Oct 2011 . 2 were point of lay Aug 2010 to 2 were point of lay Jan 2011. If I have done my maths right they are all 2 years or older. I was getting more eggs in the winter. If this is they case I have room for a few more or is it this horrible weather we are having? They all appear healthy. Any ideas would be welcome.
Purplemaniacs
I have two ex batts that I have had for just over a year, one lays, the other doesn't so perhaps yours are just ones that don't lay or only occasionally. What do you worm them with? Do they get lots of treats, I only give treats at the end of the day after they have filled up on layers pellets. Could they be laying somewhere else? I have 7 girls, the ex batts and 5 hybrids and I am getting between 2 and 5 eggs a day. Chrissie
Chicken shack
No purplemaniacs I don't load them up with treats. I tried to discover who was laying today and was able to determin that Bluebell 2 1/2yrs and Drumstick 2yrs laid an egg each (I think) I will do the same tomorrow. I was reading other posts and quite a few are also experiencing a shortage of eggs. It may be that they are getting older but I could not bare the thought of buying eggs so if this is to continue I will add two new POL to ensure I sufficiant supply. I like to keep my daughter and next neighbour supplied also. I do get an egg of each of my 2 ducks most days but they go off lay in the winter. They all work so hard for us . Chucky Mama
Are you worming with Flubenvet?
Olly
Is it possible that you have an egg-eater? They can be darn sneaky about it and leave no trace of the egg at all.
Chicken shack
I don't think so Olly as when a soft shell is laid and broken I have to remove it. Unless they only eat their own. Canibal like. I do use flubenvet. I got the complete Marriges mix makes life easier in this weather. Now the ducks have stopped laying this is the second day without any duck eggs. They usually lay before I let them out to FR. I have checked and can't see any hidden.
Chicken shack
When I went to lock the ducks and chickens up Tonto (Indian runner duck) had laid an egg. Lets hope they all get back to normal. The sun was out all day today, I am sure they all prefer it.
