Silkies and Polands

Recommended Posts

Hello, does anyone know where i can get both silkies and polands in the north west? I live near Lancaster and am willing to travel. Does anyone else keep these breeds together? I know you shouldn't keep polands with other breeds but i was thinking it would be ok if they were with silkies?

Thanks!

Hi,

You can check with the Poland club (www.polandclub.co.uk) they have breeders that would be willing to sell either eggs or chickens. Just check which breeder is closest to you. Hope that helps I don't know about the silkies but see if they have a club as well. I would think you would be able to get some from the club breeders. Also check the back of Practical Poultry they usually have breeders in the back few pages divided up in areas.

I keep Silkies and Polands together and find that they mix really well. Neither have great vision because of their hair does and both are gentle, kind breeds. They also both need similar conditions in that they need a shelter in the rain and need to be dried if they get wet so that they don't go to bed with wet 'hair'. I use a paper kitchen towel unless they get totally soaked when I use the hair dryer on a low setting, which they actually seem to like. I will say that the Polands take a bit more drying than the Silkies but I'll also say that they are my favourites being less allusive than my Silkies and very talkative. One of my Polands is just like a wee parrot and loves to ride around on my shoulder :D

Unfortunately I don't know of any breeders in the north, however, at the Reading Bantam show in the Spring every Poland breeder I approached seemed to come from the north west :) Also Rachel who runs Hamble Valley Poultry (specialists in Silkies and Polands) said she was going to get some Poland eggs from the north west recently so it might be worth giving her a call.

For silkies you could also try The Silkie Club

P.S. Lots of people say that Polands need special drinkers but I have found they can use the Glug just fine and it doesn't mean their heads come out all wet either.

Hi,

I can't give you any advice about where to get them from, but just wanted to say that I have a poland in a flock with other bantams (pekins, sussex) and she gets along just fine. Its a bit like watching the kid who doesnt really fit in tagging along with the others, as she just wanders around after them, only seeming to realise what they are doing once they have moved on to another activity, but she's just lovely. I'm not sure of the pecking order as they all seem to get on well, but if she wants to get food or water she just goes up and the others move for her, so she cant be bottom!

Good luck with your hunt for them :)

Hello minieggs that totally describes my Chamois Poland too - always last to get anywhere but not at the bottom somehow  She reminds me of Luna Lovegood in Harry Potter.

Ah yes I can just see it!Floating around after the others :)

Good luck with your polands and silkies :D
