Lone Chicken :-(

Recommended Posts

We started with 3 lovely hens 4 years ago and after losing Kylie this weekend are left with just one hen, Davina. I think I have read that lone chickens do not do well and they get lonely, can anyone please give me some advice? We are not really up for getting new chickens and we want the best for Davina so suspect that we will need to rehome her - she was the first one out of the box all those years ago after all!!

Grateful for your help, thank you!

Hi Emma,

So sad…I am sorry. WE had two girls, and then in the snow the fox managed to get in and we lost our Ginger. Blondie did pine and was very lonely, and we made the decision to get two more. We were worried…firstly that they would not get on..that we might lose them too etc etc..But now, six months on, they are great together, and Blondie is one happy girl again.

Like our decision to get chooks in the first place (boy did we worry…would we really like them??? would they be too much???) - Never regretted it, event though we war so upset at losing Ginger. We are still worried about the foxes though and are trying to be extra vigalent. Good luck whatever decision you make,..and give your self some time

Sorry to hear your sad news. If it's any consolation I have kept one chicken by herself since her companion died over 12 months ago. The eglu is very close to the house and I'm forever letting the cat in and out and saying hello to the chicken. She seems quite content, looks healthy and lays fairly regularly. Like people all chickens will be different. See how she fairs. x

I've recently lost hatty leaving 2 so i automatically got 2 more so i wouldn't leave just 1 try getting her a couple of friends, maybe ex bats or a POL i got 1 of each they are still getting used to each other my POL and EXbat come into our house at night Lucky's still quite bald and i worry about her  but they get on in the day fine accept for a few little tail chasing moments to say who's in charge but nothing as bad as i thought

Sorry to hear about Kylie.

If you don't want to get any more chickens at the moment, the best thing is probably to try to re-home your lone girl. Although some lone hens do manage ok, as a rule they prefer to be part of a flock. You could see how it goes, and in the meantime look for a possible new home for her if it becomes clear that she needs company.
