Chook has laid her first egg today!

 

She went under a bush in a little nest that she had made herself, but luckily I caught her in there and checked back later to find the egg.

 

My questions are:

 

How do I go about getting her to lay in the nest box? One of my other girls just lay in the nest box straight away so i'm not sure how to go about getting her to move laying spot...

 

There seemed to be a bit of blood on the egg - is this normal?

Congratulations on the egg! Did you weigh it?

 

A bit of blood in a first egg is not unheard of and nothing to worry about at this stage. One of my hens laid a bloody first egg and the rest of her eggs have been fine. The same hen also laid some of her first eggs outside of the nest box (in the garden), and is now laying in the nest box. I think it can just take a bit of time for them to get things right.

I put golf balls in the nest box to get them to lay in the right place.

Sounds normal to me, my pekin Molly laid her 1st few eggs in the run!!! So I used dummy eggs in the nestbox and she soon got the idea!! But be warned and don't make the same mistake as me....don't leave them in the nest too long as that sent my pekin broody!!!! ( I was waiting for the others to start laying!!)

 

Enjoy the yummy egg!! My best friends daughter calls them the real "mini eggs"!!

Hurrah! I got my first egg today... from my White Star.
